Call for Submissions: Fall 2024 Theme

Dialogues Across Health, Science, Humanities, and Archives (DAHSHA) invites submissions for our Fall 2024 volume dedicated to the theme of mentorship.

Supported by Rice University’s Fondren Library, DAHSHA is an open-access journal that provides a platform for scholars in the fields of health science, medicine, the humanities, and archives to explore the consequences of developments in those fields by applying historical, cultural, social, and scientific perspectives to pedagogy, research, and advocacy. This publication aims to inform medical practitioners, researchers, medical humanists, and health scientists about various obstacles to reaching policies that engage multiple nations and cultures and provide possible ways forward.

This volume of DAHSHA addresses mentorship and how this often-overlooked aspect of scholarly endeavors is critical to all human endeavors, especially those involving the humanities, science, medicine, and the preservation of knowledge.

The career of Dr. William “Jack” Schull (1922-2017) provided the principal inspiration for this publication. Dr. Schull was known primarily for his work in the study of the effects of radiation on human populations. However, he had a varied career characterized by his concern for his fellow humans. Throughout his career, he emphasized collaboration and mentorship. The editors of this publication follow his example by mentoring undergraduate, graduate, professional and post-graduate students in all aspects of this journal.

In the spirit of Dr. Schull, we welcome contributions that explore what mentorship is, what it has been, and what it might be. Our goal is to produce a volume  that directly addresses multiple facets of mentorship.

Possible topics include the role of mentorship in the following areas:

  • Scientific and medical discovery
  • Public policy in relation to healthcare
  • Cross-cultural collaborations
  • Genealogies of mentorship
  • Pedagogical relationships and projects
  • Challenges of mentoring across the disciplines (i.e., STEM and Humanities fields)
  • Preservation of intellectual materials through archives and repositories, including  William “Jack” Schull’s Papers and Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) collections at the Texas Medical Center Library
  • Review process for grants and publications as a tool for mentoring
  • Future possibilities of mentoring

Genres can include critical reflections, personal narratives, program or project descriptions, collaborative writings, writings on materials and experiences in the archive, teaching methodologies, statements of mentorship philosophy, etc.

Articles should be between 2,000 and 8,000 words (not including notes); DAHSHA editors may make exceptions for shorter or longer manuscripts. Manuscripts should follow Chicago Manual of Style 17th Edition. Submissions in other media are also welcome. All submissions will undergo peer review. Please direct inquiries to the Managing Editor at cbc5@rice.edu.
